Good to know:
During a wine tasting, your host will greet you with numerous samples of wine. The host will typically start with the white wines, then the red wines and end off with a sweeter tasting wine. The host will pour the samples and describe both the smell and the taste.

Holding your glass up to the light, you'll observe the colour. A bright, clean colour signifies the quality. Tilt the glass slightly to the side. Younger wines will maintain uniform colour throughout, while older wines will lose their colouring and become translucent close to the rim.

Your host might remind you of the five basic steps in sampling the wines which are: colour, swirl, smell, taste, and savour. These are equally known as the "five S": see a swirl, sniff, sip, savour.
