The Addo Elephant Park is the only park in the world to boast having "the Big 7" - lion, leopard, black Rhino, addo elephant, cape buffalo, great white shark, and southern right whale. Hunting for ivory started in the early 1700's and by the 1900 most of the remaining addo wildlife were completely exterminated. Only 12 addo elephant remained before the Addo Elephant National Park was proclaimed in 1931, with an area size of 2000 hectares.
The Addo elephant number has grown since and now has over 600 elephant. The elephant that you will see in the Addo are the descendants from the herds of elephant that once freely roamed the eastern and southern cape.
